MAVALIE Team: The Inspiration Behind the Glorious Journey to 1stRunner-Up in the 12th UI Studentpreneur Business Model Canvas Competition
Mavalie Team, consisting of Hallie Nugroho Hardin, Ivana Shaina Putridewi, and I Gd Mayun Dharma Yudha, students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University, won the prestigious award as 1st Runner-Up in the 12th UI Studentpreneur Business Model Canvas Competition. The competition took place from December 10, 2022, to February 4, 2023, and attracted 50–70 participants from various universities throughout Indonesia. The 12th UI Studentpreneur Business Model Canvas Competition, organized by Universitas Indonesia, is a competition that tests students' ability to design a strong business model. The competition involved a series of stages, starting from the creation of the business model canvas to the final, which was held live at the University of Indonesia. Mavalie managed to achieve this brilliant achievement after going through a preparation process that required high dedication. The sacrifice of time and energy, as well as the thorough preparation they did, led Mavalie to the 1st Runner-Up position in this prestigious competition.
Mavalie's journey to victory began when they applied for the competition in late November last year. Next, they conducted market research to identify the problem they wanted to address. During this process, they conducted interviews and initial preparations for the business model canvas, which was the first stage of the competition. Until January this year, Mavalie received an announcement that they had been selected as one of the Top 10 teams to enter the final stage of business pitching. At that stage, they had to prepare a pitch deck that they would later present. Hallie also explained, "We had also received mentoring related to our business idea from Ronaldo, the brand executive of Tropicana Slim and Nutrisari. There, my team and I practiced pitching skills, and I got insights that really helped the process of making our pitch deck, especially regarding revenue streams and sustainability aspects," she said.
Such a long process certainly presented Mavalie with various challenges. They revealed that in making the pitch deck, they had to revise it many times to perfect it to make it look compelling in the eyes of investors and, of course, the judges. "I still remember the night before the D-day; we reviewed the pitch deck many times, looked at pitching references from International Pitch Winners to get references, and practiced pitching as much as possible", said Hallie. Of course, this shows that the three teenagers have determination and a critical mind on how to maximize their pitch deck. Mavalie also did pitching simulations to make sure their presentations fit within the tight time constraints. "Practice makes perfect," said Ivana. In addition, another way they dealt with all the challenges and obstacles was through good communication between teams and respecting each member's opinion.
At the awarding night, Mavalie had committed that whatever the results of the competition, they would accept them because, in every competition, they would always get new and unforgettable experiences. "We Mavalie have committed from the beginning that winning and losing is normal, and even if we lose, we still get new experiences that cannot be forgotten," said Mayun, one of the Mavalie members. However, who would have thought that when the champions were announced one by one, it turned out that Mavalie won 1st Runner-Up, which certainly made them very happy and certainly grateful that the dedication, effort, and hard work they had put in for three months had paid off?
The process that Mavalie went through certainly provided new experiences for them. The joy and gratitude that Mavalie certainly felt was seen in how they thanked each other for the good cooperation. "Thanks to my team, Mavalie, for valuable experiences with valuable people and opportunities for all organizers, mentors, and others", said Ivana. Mavalie also advised FEB Unud students who also want to participate in the competition to focus on the process of achieving the outcome, not just the outcome itself. Of course, in this way, friends can exert maximum effort without fear. Then, on the way to participating in the competition, we must believe in ourselves that we can face whatever challenges are ahead. Don't think about winning or losing first; the most important thing is to try, pray, and do your best, and leave the rest to those above. At least we will definitely get new experiences.
Mavalie's success as 1st Runner-Up is certainly the result of hard work, dedication, and strong teamwork. The process that Mavalie has gone through can certainly be used as an inspiration for all students of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Udayana University and for all people who want to take part in the competition to not only focus on the final result but also learn from challenges, have commitment, and always try their best. Mavalie proved that with strong determination, hard work, and belief, we can achieve extraordinary achievements. (sdy)
