Beyond Compliance: FEB Unud Hosts International Practitioner Guest Lecture on the Role of Accountants and Tax Consultants in the Digital Era
The Bachelor of Accounting Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University (FEB Unud), organized an international practitioner guest lecture themed “Beyond Compliance: The Role of Accountants and Tax Consultants in the Digital Era.” The event featured I Kadek Sumadi, S.E., S.H., M.Si., M.H., Ak., CA, BKP—a senior practitioner, Managing Partner of SWS Consulting, and a Tax Court Attorney—as the keynote speaker. This lecture aimed to broaden students' horizons regarding the ongoing transformation of the accounting profession, which no longer merely records transactions but has evolved into a strategic role demanding data analytics, regulatory mastery, and business advisory capabilities.
During his presentation, the speaker explained that the digital era and the implementation of the Coretax System have brought massive shifts to Indonesia’s taxation ecosystem through data-driven service integration, risk supervision, and systematic data matching. Every digital transaction now leaves a traceable footprint, increasing tax risks such as: The issuance of risk-based SP2DK (Request for Explanation on Data and/or Information), Tax audits triggered by data mismatches, Transfer pricing complexities, and Emerging digital tax issues.
Consequently, tax compliance is no longer a mere administrative obligation but a vital component of corporate governance, corporate reputation, and business sustainability.
Beyond regulatory aspects, students were given a practical overview of the tax profession's day-to-day operations, ranging from tax compliance, tax return (SPT) management, VAT (PPN) and e-Faktur, withholding tax, and fiscal reconciliation, to strategic approaches for handling tax audits and disputes. The utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in taxation was also discussed as a tool for data analysis and anomaly detection. Nonetheless, the speaker emphasized that the human element remains irreplaceable when it comes to providing professional judgment, understanding complex business contexts, communicating effectively with tax authorities, and upholding ethical and legal integrity.
The lecture also shed light on emerging career paths in the digital tax era, inspiring students with opportunities such as: Tax Data Analyst, Tax Technology Specialist, Forensic Tax Analyst, Digital Tax Advisor, Pricing Specialist, Tech-savvy tax consultants versed in international regulations.
Students were highly encouraged to build core competencies early on by mastering financial statements, data analytics, accounting software, and English proficiency. Through this initiative, FEB Unud reaffirms its commitment to delivering industry-relevant education, preparing students to become adaptive, strategic-thinking professional accountants capable of delivering significant added value in the future
